United cruise to Hammers victory

28 Aug 2010 - 19:23:53

Manchester United returned to winning ways after coasting to a 3-0 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils dropped two points after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Fulham last weekend.

However, there were no mistakes this time around as Sir Alex Ferguson's side dominated the Hammers from start to finish.

Wayne Rooney returned to the starting line-up after missing the Fulham game with a stomach virus and the England striker ended his goal drought in front of watching England boss Fabio Capello.

Rooney coolly converted a 33rd minute spot-kick awarded after former United defender Jonathan Spector had clipped the heels of Ryan Giggs in the box.

West Ham are yet to win a point this season and their rock-bottom confidence was clearly visible at Old Trafford where lone striker Carlton Cole was a peripheral figure for most of the game.

Nani had forced Robert Green to tip a thunderous shot onto his crossbar, before the lively Portugal winger finally doubled the advantage on 50 minutes.

He picked up a pass from Rooney before dummying his way past two defenders and crashing an unstoppable shot past Green.

He, Rooney, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov were too hot for the Hammers to handle and United could and should have won by a much greater margin.

Berbatov completed the scoring on 69 minutes when he met a clipped cross from Nani with a powerful, acrobatic finish from close range.
