United boss Sir Alex Ferguson vows to give Owen World Cup chance

Sir Alex Ferguson last night promised to do everything he could to get Michael Owen to the World Cup but conceded that Wayne Rooney's fantastic form will give fellow striker Owen little chance to play. Ferguson sees Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov as his first-choice strike pairing, but 30-year-old Owen may get a rare opportunity to show what he can do in the FA Cup against Leeds United today or the Carling Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City on Wednesday. 'I am sure Michael would love to go to the World Cup and we must try as best we can to get him there,' said Sir Alex. Third-choice: Owen is behind Rooney and Berbatov in United's pecking order 'A player with Michael's history and goalscoring ability would want to go and re-enact what he did in 1998. 'It is difficult when you have a squad our size. It is difficult toleave Rooney out of your team. That's the thing, because Owen isidentical to Wayne in the position he plays in terms of being furtherup the pitch, with Berbatov in the team The combinations are morelikely to be Berbatov and Owen, or Berbatov or Rooney. 'I imagine Michael will be involved in our next two games, though. He has never been a problem and hasn't missed a day's training.'  The Morgan on Sport Award for the Football Personality of 2009: Ryan Giggs needs Manchester United votes to pip Burnley's Graham Alexander Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson warns his players against inciting Leeds fansFletcher relieved to see Vidic and defensive pals return for Man UnitedMANCHESTER UNITED FC
