Three Realistic January Targets for Manchester United
It’s not long now until clubs can start to pursue new recruits for January, this has led to the rumour mill brewing up some outrageous speculation already. However, I am going to look at three real possible transfers for Manchester United as it is clear that Moyes wants to bolster his squad quickly.
Plenty was made of the Herrera deal to United in the summer which fell through in unusual circumstances, involving three unidentified men who were allegedly rogue agents. Although the midfielder has played down a move in January it is clear that David Moyes is keen to pursue the Spaniard and given his indifferent form this season may be easier to obtain than during the summer. Herrera was instrumental in Bilbao’s win over Barcelona recently and although he has spent some time on the bench this season he could make a real impact for United who definitely need strengthening in this area of the pitch. Ilkay Gundogan is also on Moyes’ radar but it’s highly unlikely he will leave Dortmund for Old Trafford making the Herrera deal look like his only foreign opportunity.
United had two bids rejected in the summer for the left-back and it has been rumoured that the club are close to agreeing a deal for the injured defender. No one can doubt Baines’ ability so even though he is nearing 29 this would be a fantastic signing for the champions. Baines has scored 21 premier league goals in his career so far with almost 40 assists, making him arguably one of the most valuable full-backs in world football at the moment. The defender made more key passes than any other player last season in the premier league and his form has continued this season so Everton will be looking for a large sum of money come January. Moyes has his heart set on Baines but perhaps a deal to tie up Luke Shaw could be a more sensible investment. Shaw has already been compared to ex-saints man Gareth Bale and at the tender age of 18 presents better value for money.
The French international has not been linked with Manchester United however he is a real talent they could secure in January. Arsenal and Liverpool have both been keeping tabs on the midfielder who has featured in every league game this season apart from the first two amid speculation of a move to the Gunners. The Frenchman has stated that he wants to play in the champions league and if a bid was to be launched in January this could seriously unsettle the playmaker who may rebel against Pardew. The 27-year-old is under contract until 2016 meaning that Newcastle will only let him go for a substantial fee, many believe between £14m and £16m. This may seem like a hefty price tag but compared to Herrera who has a release clause of £31m it would be a coup for Manchester United.
