Tevez set for United debut
14 Aug 2007 - 08:28:09
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to hand a start to Carlos Tevez in Wednesday's Premier League clash against Portsmouth.
The Argentina international is expected to feature against Pompey after it was confirmed that Wayne Rooney faces two months on the sidelines after fracturing his foot in Sunday's goalless draw with Reading.
"I think Carlos will go straight into the team on Wednesday," Ferguson said on Sky Sports News.
"I would have preferred him to have waited until Sunday, the match against (Manchester) City would have given him another few days' training.
"It's been a long time but a worthwhile wait for someone as good as that. We're delighted.
"The most important thing is he's proved himself in the English game.
"The platform was there for him to use and he used it fantastically well and showed what a truly world class player he is."
Tevez added: "It is impossible to know what was going on during the summer.
"I started to realise - because each game passed in the Copa America and still the matter was not resolved.
"But I never felt I would be forced out of the game. It hurt me to leave West Ham anyway, but the lure of Manchester United was just too much."
