Terry Venables is keen to tempt Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes out of international retirement.
Scholes called time on his England career after Euro 2004, but Venables still views the 31-year-old as the best creative midfielder in the country.
England's assistant coach told the News of the World: "People say he has determined to retire from international football for good, but I hope he will change his mind.
"He is the best one or two-touch passer in the country. He sees the game unlike any other players."
Scholes, who won 66 caps, said at the time of his international retirement that he wanted to spend more time with his family and focus on his United career.
However, it is rumoured that his poor relationship with Sven-Goran Eriksson and the Swede's insistence on playing him on the left wing were also major factors in his decision.
