Stanley `pipped for Ronaldo

Published: 12 Jun 2009 - 14:38:00

Accrington chief executive Rob Heyes admits the cash-strapped club are in "a different world" to Cristiano Ronaldo and his proposed switch to Real Madrid. Stanley had to stave off winding-up proceedings this week over a £300,000 tax bill while Manchester United will bank £80million when the Portugal winger completes his move. "We're gutted about Ronaldo. We put our £79million bid in but they've come in and pipped us at the last minute," Heys told the Lancashire Telegraph. "We're a professional club in the same country but it's a different world really. That sort of money would keep us going for 50 years at least."
