Spurs battle Manchester United for Roma striker Mirko Vucinic

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to offer £17million plus Roman Pavlyuchenko for Roma striker Mirko Vucinic, according to reports in Italy. Manchester United are also interested, but the offer from Spurs would be well above what they were looking to spend on the Montenegro striker. The Italian club's financial problems and uncertainties over when a takeover will be materialise mean any transfer in or out is currently on hold. But Roma are prepared to listen to offers for Vucinic and former Arsenal forward Julio Baptista, according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, and hope to move them on before the end of July. Manager Luciano Spalletti is keen to sign Pavlyuchenko and hopes to land the Russia international on loan if a the Vucinic transfer cannot be agreed. However, they face competition for Pavlyuchenko from Villarreal, Stuttgart and Besiktas. Vucinic, 25, has been on United's radar for the past two years after he scored against them in the Champions League quarter final back in 2007. He is 6ft 1ins tall, quick and has the ability to play left wing as well as a central striker which would suit United following Ronaldo's sale and Carlos Tevez's impending departure.
