Spanish Reports: United beat Barca to World Class Argentine
Barca snoozed while United stole a march on coveted Argentine's signature.
While the whole world and his dog has been completely pre-occupied by the Cesc Fabregas saga, Marca, a Spanish publication that has strong ties with Real Madrid, has reported that Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay has all but completed his move to Old Trafford.
United have been linked for months with a move for the 26 year old with many previous reports saying that Benfica had a gentleman's agreement with United to sell their star defender.
With Los Blancos due 50% of any fee Benfica receive, then the reports are all the more credible.
Garay is a former Madrid defender whose spell at the Bernabeu hadn't worked out as he had hoped, but in making the switch to Portuguese giants Benfica, his game has really matured into that of a world class defender.
He has been likened to Rio Ferdinand in that he is a ball playing centre half with tremendous positional sense and game-reading ability. Barcelona had entered the fray for his signature in the close season too but were pre-occupied with closing the £50M deal on Neymar. United stole a march on Barcelona at that time and have now turned their attention to David Luiz of Chelsea.
Garay began his career with Newell Old Boys in 2004 before moving to Europe with Racing Santander in 2005. His form for the Spanish side saw him seal a move to Real Madrid in 2008 although as part of the deal he was loaned back to his former club for a season.
Despite Benfica ending the season trophy-less, Garay impressed for Benfica and was part of a defence that conceded just 20 goals in 30 league matches in 2012/2013.
