Smalling hails Ferdinand impact
Published : 12 Oct 2010 15:34:48
Chris Smalling believes there is no better mentor than Rio Ferdinand as the young United defender continued his rapid rise by helping England Under-21s reach the European Championship finals. The 20-year-old netted his first goal for Stuart Pearce's side as they secured a hard-earned 2-1 lead over Romania to take into the play-off second leg in Botosani. And Smalling played the full game as England shut out the Romanians in a 0-0 draw on Tuesday. Smalling, scouted from non-league Maidstone by Fulham just two years ago before then landing a dream £10m move to Old Trafford, said: The stature of the guy is something to look up to and he has been a real joy to be alongside. He is so friendly in terms of the training ground every day. I have been lucky to play both my games [starting for United] alongside him. He has eased me in really well and hopefully I will have many more games with him. Rio has built up that presence over the years, he is just very commanding. Whether he puts on that captain's armband or it is just in training, he is leading the team. I have had to pick up along the same way, because I am the eyes of the central-midfielders. What are your first impressions of Smalling? Have your say.
