Sir Bobby Charlton: My United XI contains just two of the current crop... and me!

ShareSir Bobby Charlton exclusive Click HERE to read Jeff Powell's brilliant interview with the Manchester United legend Two of the thoroughly modern footballers who will try to deny Barcelona at Wembley make it into Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time Manchester United XI. Not Wayne Rooney, though he gets as close as the bench. Not Ryan Giggs, though Sir Bobby recognises the Welshman's astonishing longevity. The accolade goes to the defensive axis of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Formidable partnership: Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are arguably United's finest defensive pairing ever 'We've had some magnificent centre halves down the years,' says Sir Bobby. 'But these two form the most formidable pairing of all.' At my insistence, although not after pressing vehemently the claims of Roy Keane, Giggs and Paul Scholes, Charlton includes himself in midfield. In reality it is Captain Marvel who keeps out Keane. 'They were both tremendous, heroic all-round players and leaders but Bryan Robson brings the added value of more goals.' The other really tough decision was in attack, where Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo have to give way to Eric Cantona - 'not only because of that extraordinary ability but because he was an absolute inspiration to every young player who came into the team.'
