Sir Alex Ferguson rules out January signings

Published: 31 Dec 2010 - 16:07:48

Sir Alex Ferguson claims he will not be dipping into the transfer market in January as he bids to lead Manchester United to a an unprecedented 19th championship triumph.  The Scot has overseen an unbeaten start to the season without ever really getting the very best from his side, a 7-1 mauling of Blackburn earlier this month aside. That his players have ground out results has proved to Sir Alex that he has no need to splash the cash during the winter window. Strength in depth: Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not be adding to his squad in January Ferguson, with an eye on the future, spent big in the summer on three relatively unknown players - Bebe, Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling - and has already seen results in some quarters. He also earlier this month completed the capture of Denmark keeper Anders Lindegaard from Aalesund, which could herald the departure of either Tomasz Kuszczak or Ben Amos. Matty James, Joshua King and Ritchie de Laet have all been recalled from Preston in the wake of Darren Ferguson's dismissal, whilst there are still question marks over Tom Cleverley, who has been so impressive during his loan spell at Wigan. However, as Manchester City prepare to splash out on Edin Dzeko, Ferguson has confirmed he will not be following suit. 'I don't think so,' he said. 'There is always this situation that if a certain player came up that we like we would do something but that doesn't really happen in January. Devilishly good: United are still unbeaten in the league this season despite rarely hitting top gear 'In any case, a lot of the playersrelish the fact we are keeping ahead of the game by bringing in playerswho can challenge and be a first-team squad player. We are all in ittogether and we all want to win together. Having a stronger squadhelps.' However, while there appears to be no new faces at Old Trafford, it seems likely that there will be some outgoings. Afterwatching Danny Welbeck's loan move to Sunderland propel him towardswhat Ferguson expects to be an England call-up next year, theManchester United boss has decided to release Federico Macheda for theremainder of the season as well. Many happy returns? David Beckham said he won't hold his breath over an offer from Sir Alex Asuitable club is still to be sorted for the Italy Under-21international but it is expected Serie A will be the most appropriatedestination for Macheda, whom Ferguson opted to keep ahead of Welbeckand Mame Biram Diouf last summer. The United manager is anxious to stress the move is purely short-term and that Macheda has a big Old Trafford future. 'I had a chat with Federico and explained the Welbeck situation,'said Ferguson. 'It can pan out exactly the same for him. It would bethe same thing, going to a club, getting that experience for six monthsand coming back to us a better player. Loan ranger: Italian striker Federico Macheda is likely to leave on a temporary basis 'The reason we let Danny Welbeck and Mame Biram Diouf go was thatthey are young and they need games. And with Welbeck it has proved thepoint that through consistent, regular football, you can progressdramatically. 'Okay, in the previous two years he played in two cup finals and anFA Cup semi-final. But in a consistent nature he didn't have enoughfootball to produce the kind of performances we are seeing now. He hasbeen fantastic for Sunderland and must eventually get in the Englandsquad. That is exactly what we wanted.' Ferguson confirmed that both Welbeck and Diouf, who has not madequite the same impact at Blackburn but has still gained usefulexperience, will remain with their current clubs for the rest of theseason. However, he needs to speak with Wigan counterpart Roberto Martinezbefore reaching a decision about the future of midfielder Tom Cleverley. 'Tom has done excellently as well but the agreement with him wasalways that we would review it in January,' said Ferguson. 'I have afantastic relationship with Wigan so I have not discussed it anyfurther than that. 'The only problem is that we have lost Park Ji-sung to the Asia Cupfor the whole of January and I don't have Antonio Valencia back untilthe end of February, so we are a bit light in that respect in terms ofwide positions.'  Alexis Sanchez alerts suitors Manchester United with Premier League dream despite Inter Milan weighing up bidVengeful Fergie orders Preston loan stars back to United after son's sackingBag a bargain in the sales!
