Sir Alex Ferguson hits out at TV pundit Mark Lawrenson over claims of row with Wayne Rooney

Published: 04 Apr 2009 - 22:57:30

Ferguson, who is preparing his team for a week that could go a long way to deciding their fate this season, accused Lawrenson of "self-promotion" over his accusation that Ferguson had a row with Wayne Rooney after United's 4-1 defeat to Liverpool last month and that there was a problem between them. "Everyone knows Rooney had a massive row with Ferguson after the Liverpool game and was then left out," Lawrenson claimed last week.  Related ArticlesTevez to take centre stageUnited rubbish £75m Ronaldo 'bid'Ferguson gives a positive spinBerbatov out for two weeksWayne Rooney escapes further sanction for Fulham red cardManchester United looking over their shoulder as Sir Alex Ferguson rues costly dayFerguson said: "Absolute nonsense. I don't know where that came from but the revealing part of it is 'everybody knows' – but I didn't know and I was in there. These people self-promote, but who the hell's bothered?" United, who are now two points behind Liverpool, play Aston Villa and then host Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday amid further speculation about Ronaldo. Although the Old Trafford club were quick to refute claims the Portuguese has agreed a £75 million move to Spain, it is an issue that will come to a head this summer. Ronaldo's contract expires in 2012, but the end of the season marks United's final chance to negotiate a new deal or risk losing the winger for £12 million in 2010, when he could buy himself out of the two remaining years under Fifa rules.
