Sir Alex Ferguson denies Manchester United will make a move for Sol Campbell
Published: 11 Dec 2009 - 11:01:17
Ferguson, who will welcome back fit-again defender Nemanja Vidic for Saturday's Old Trafford clash with Aston Villa, had been linked with a surprise swoop for Campbell, who has been without a club since walking out on League Two outfit Notts County earlier this season. With United in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, that saw them face Wolfsburg on Tuesday without nine first-team defenders, 35-year-old had been suggested as a possible signing. Ferguson said: "I don't know where this came from but it is all wrong. 'Sol Campbell was a great player, but he is not a player we are thinking about getting to come to United. "Jonny Evans could be back in 10 days and John O'Shea will be with us in January. "We are having a hard time with centre-backs at this moment in time, but I am sure that, by January, most of them will be back." The link to Campbell raised speculation that United's £699m debt had begun to severely affect the club's spending power. United's owners, the Glazer family, are reportedly looking to refinance the debt and, with the £80m banked from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer still unspent, supporters have grown restless, questioning the club's readiness to spend at the top end of the market. United have spent a net £32.4m on new players since the Glazers took ownership of the club in May 2005, but Ferguson insists that the money is there for a raid on the transfer market if he wishes to recruit additions to his squad. He said: "It has been said I do not have the money, but the money is there if I wanted to use it. "I didn't see any value in the summer and I don't see any value at the moment either. I am happy with the players I already have at the club."
