Scanlon funeral on Wednesday

THE funeral cortege of Busby Babe Albert Scanlon will detour past Old Trafford on Wednesday and pause by the statue of Sir Matt Busby. Old team-mates and members of the Association of Former Manchester United Players will be waiting there to pay tribute to the dashing young winger who survived the Munich air crash but with injuries that robbed him of some of his great talent. The cortege will pause at Old Trafford 11.15am before the funeral at at All Soul's Church, Weaste, Salford at 12 noon. Harry Gregg, the Northern Ireland goalkeeper who also survived the air disaster, said: "Albert and I kept in touch and were together in Dublin recently to unveil a plaque to Billy Whelan one of the players who lost his life in the crash.  "Albert was an ordinary lad from Salford who after his football career worked at the Manchester Docks and in security. "For me he typified what the Busby Babes were about. He was certainly an exceptionally good player, a flying machine, and a really laid back character very popular with his team-mates. "I still think of him by the nickname he had as a player. We called him 'Joe Friday' for the way he knew exactly what was going on around him like the house detective in the television series of those days."
