Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Wayne Rooney could be sidelined for longer than expected, after his ankle injury proved to be more serious than was first feared.
The 25-year-old England international, who recently signed a new long-term contract at Old Trafford, has not featured since the 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion two weeks ago.
However, he had been expected to make his return in the derby clash with Manchester City in two weeks' time, but Ferguson now thinks that that is not a realistic possibility.
He told reporters: "I think it may be longer. There is no recovery, it is just rest.
"Before he went away (on holiday) we did his remedial in terms of what we could do at the time. Thereafter, rest - we're quite happy with that."
