Rooney remains Anfield doubt
23 Oct 2009 - 10:40:59
Striker Wayne Rooney remains a doubt for Manchester United's Premier League trip to bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that the England striker still remains troubled by the calf problem picked up during a World Cup qualifier against Ukraine two weeks ago.
Rooney has missed United's last two games but will be given until Saturday evening to prove his fitness ahead of the trip to Anfield.
Should he be ruled out then Ferguson could either employ Dimitar Berbatov as a lone frontman or hand Michael Owen the chance to start against his former club.
Meanwhile, Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher is another doubt with a groin injury.
"On the injury front I can't give a clear picture, there are still some doubts about Rooney and Fletcher," revealed Ferguson.
However, the United boss has revealed that both Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra will return for the trip to Merseyside.
Veteran midfielder Giggs and France full-back Evra missed the midweek Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow in Russia with minor leg and heel problems respectively.
