Rooney receives role reminder

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been told to stay central and not drift around in search of the ball. Sir Alex Ferguson intends to deploy Rooney as an out-and-out centre-forward more regularly this season following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid. The immediate response has been positive, with Rooney scoring a fine goal in the Community Shield and then netting the winner against Birmingham on Sunday. However, Rooney could not resist the temptation to move out to wide areas at times and assistant manager Mike Phelan has reminded him he can do more damage from a central position. "He wants to be everywhere all the time," Phelan explained. "But we have 10 other good players on the field and sometimes he has to realise the place where he does his best work is the best place to be. "Wayne sometimes drifts around and there were instances of that against Birmingham. His overall performance was good but he needs to remember when we create chances he scores goals." Rooney's goal against Birmingham was his 99th for the club but he admits he could have reached his century in the same game. "It could have been 100," said the England international. "I had a couple of chances but their keeper made some good saves. "Overall I am delighted with the goal and pleased we got the three points."
