Rooney named player of the year
26 Apr 2010 - 07:27:45
Wayne Rooney has been named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year following his stunning season for Manchester United.
The 24-year-old, who has scored 34 goals in all competitions, polled more votes than Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez and Didier Drogba of Chelsea in the annual award voted for by their peers.
"It's a great feeling to win the player of the year award because it's voted for by the players," said Rooney, who is the Premier League's 26-goal leading scorer.
"It's something I'm really proud of and it's a great honour.
"I remember coming here in 2005 and 2006 to win the young player of the year.
"I saw the players winning the main one and it's something I've aimed for since."
Rooney could miss the remainder of the domestic season with a groin injury after sitting out United's 3-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday.
However, the England striker is confident of being fit for the World Cup in South Africa.
"The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that," he said.
"I'm hoping to play for United in the last game of the season (against Stoke City) on May 9."
