England striker Wayne Rooney has been left out of the Manchester United squad for the game at Everton, following recent revelations about his off-field behaviour.
The 24-year-old has been at the centre of a media frenzy this week, following reports that he had cheated on his wife, Colleen, with call girl Jenny Thompson.
Still Rooney had been expected to feature at Goodison Park against his former club, but he has been omitted by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
On Friday afternoon, the Rooneys issued a joint statement asking to be given privacy as the attempt to deal with their problems.
It read: "The last six days have been extremely painful for us and for our families.
"It is impossible for us, as it would be for any family, to attempt to resolve any issues in the current media glare and against the backdrop of so many inaccurate and intrusive stories.
"We would, therefore, ask that the media now respects our privacy and the right of our family to discuss these matters in private."
