Rooney escapes FA action
27 Oct 2008 - 14:53:54
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will not face any action from the Football Association for his badge-kissing antics during Saturday's 1-1 draw against his former club Everton at Goodison Park.
Rooney was booked for a foul on Mikel Arteta and, when the Everton fans started to barrack him, the 23-year-old responded by kissing his Manchester United badge.
That reaction angered the home supporters even more and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson decided to substitute the England international before he was dismissed.
It had been thought that Rooney would face disciplinary action for his antics, but the FA have said they will not be investigating the matter further as referee Alan Wiley saw the incident at the time and had a quiet word with the United player.
Ferguson admitted after the draw that he had taken Rooney off midway through the second half as he feared his striker could have been red-carded.
"The crowd were reacting and I did feel he might get sent off so I had to take him off," said the veteran Scot.
"I just didn't think the referee was giving our players proper protection. I saw some bad tackles and it's the referee's job to protect players."
