Rooney backed to stay calm
05 May 2009 - 08:48:06
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident that Wayne Rooney will avoid any disciplinary problems against Arsenal in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.
A caution for Rooney, Patrice Evra or Carlos Tevez would see them miss the Rome final should United progress, but Ferguson has full faith in his players.
He commented: "I don't need to address it with Wayne. He knows the circumstances. I don't need to spell it out to him.
"He is a mature young man. He understands it perfectly well. He needs to be disciplined, but most of the time he is that way.
"I have noticed a trend of the referees being very professional and tolerant in situations like this.
"They know the seriousness of a player getting three bookings in the whole tournament and missing the final because of it.
"Obviously if a player steps out of line there are definitely no excuses."
