Rio wants stronger action
12 Oct 2009 - 08:35:32
Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has accused football's governing bodies of handing out "feeble" punishments following racist incidents.
Ferdinand has called on the likes of FIFA and UEFA to begin banning clubs from competitions if their supporters are found guilty of racist abuse.
The regular punishment to those found guilty is normally a financial one.
"Then you see feeble punishments handed out," Ferdinand he told MUTV.
"The message to youngsters is that it couldn't have been that bad after all.
"If you are (disqualified) out of a competition then I think young people get the message - that it is harder-hitting."
