Rio verdict boosts Red Devils
01 May 2009 - 12:37:02
Manchester United have been boosted by the news that Rio Ferdinand's rib injury is not as serious as was first feared.
The 30-year-old England international was injured late on in the 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg win over Arsenal in midweek, with United fearful that Ferdinand had suffered a cracked rib.
However, subsequent scans have shown up no broken bones and Ferdinand could be back for the return leg against the Gunners next week.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed: "It's good news with Rio. It is not a cracked bone, he had a bit of bruising on the lung which was why he was coughing up blood, but there has been nothing since then.
"Hopefully we can get him ready for Tuesday, he seems almost back to normal. But he won't play tomorrow.
"Of course when you see it at the time you fear the worst, but now it is just a case of getting him back training, hopefully on Sunday, and getting him ready for Tuesday."
Meanwhile, PFA Player of the Year Ryan Giggs has admitted that he never really considered leaving Old Trafford.
The 35-year-old made his 800th appearance for the Red Devils in midweek, having been linked with clubs in Italy and Spain earlier on in his career.
However, Giggs admitted: "It was never a consideration to leave.
"I was linked with a few clubs but it was never really close. Why would I think about it when I was always happy here?"
