Rio hopes injuries are behind him

13 May 2010 - 10:52:17

Rio Ferdinand is keeping his fingers crossed that his injury problems are behind him as he prepares to captain England at the World Cup.

Ferdinand has started just 12 Premier League games for Manchester United this season following a long-running battle with a back problem.

He returned for the final game of the season last weekend and is hoping to stay injury-free during England's World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Three Lions coach Fabio Capello has named a series of potential replacement centre-halves in his provisional 30-man squad.

John Terry, Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Matthew Upson and the recalled Jamie Carragher are all jostling for position ahead of the cut to 23 players on June 1.

"It has been a frustrating time but you've got to get on with it," said Ferdinand, was handed the captain's armband following Terry's demotion in February.

"Hopefully now I'm coming out the back end of it and, fingers crossed, I will not get any more injuries."
