Red Devils reveal Rooney relief
01 Apr 2010 - 12:57:15
Manchester United have revealed that Wayne Rooney suffered only "minor" damage to his ankle ligaments against Bayern Munich.
The Red Devils have declined to comment on how long Rooney will be absent for, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson expected to clarify those details at his weekly press briefing on Friday.
However, the news comes as welcome relief to United and England fans who feared the worst when the striker limped off at the end of Tuesday's 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat in Germany with a serious looking injury.
"We're pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture," a spokesperson told the club's official website.
"The scan revealed only minor ligament damage."
Rooney's participation in United's run-in and also England's World Cup campaign in South Africa was immediately thought to be in doubt.
It now seems more likely that the 34-goal striker will be back in action within three to four weeks.
However, Rooney is almost certain to miss Saturday's vital Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
