Manchester United are on the lookout for a new assistant manager after they confirmed the release of Carlos Queiroz to become the new Portugal boss.
Sir Alex Ferguson's number two had been linked with the post following the announcement during Euro 2008 that Luiz Felipe Scolari's was leave to take over at Chelsea.
Queiroz, 55, spent five seasons at Old Trafford in two spells as Ferguson's assistant and is credited with helping lure the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson to the club.
"Carlos is one of the best coaches in world football," Ferguson told the club's official website.
"His attention to detail, ability to innovate and will to win have been a key factor to the team's recent successes.
"He has played an important role in building and blending the exceptional squad of players at the club."
Meanwhile, the Portuguese coach and former Real Madrid boss thanked United for allowing him to take up the opportunity.
Queiroz, who has previously worked with Portugal's under-20 and under-23 squads, is now looking forward to the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup.
"It is with a very heavy heart that I leave the greatest football club in the world after five fantastic years," he said.
"This has been a special period in my life both personally and professionally. I have been so lucky to have had the opportunity to work in first-class facilities with a staff team who are at the top of their profession."
Ferguson's search for a new number two will now commence with the likes of current backroom staff Brian McClair and Mike Phelan both early frontrunners for the post.
