Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira banned from touchline against Manchester United
Published: 14 Apr 2009 - 17:04:04
Uefa said that Ferreira cannot contact his players before or during the match, or take his place on the touchline. Ferreira was originally suspended for two matches after he gestured toward the referee when a Porto goal was disallowed during a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Feb 24. Porto appealed and Ferreira was allowed to perform his duties as coach in Manchester last Tuesday when Porto earned a 2-2 draw in the first leg match. Uefa's appeals body reduced the sentence to a one-match touchline ban and deferred the second match suspension. Despite the ban Ferreira insists he would not swap places with Sir Alex Ferguson and has vowed to go for Manchester United's jugular. "There is no way I would swap places," said Ferreira. "I like my team and I don't feel any pressure. "We need to control the game and to do that we need to control our emotions. "Manchester United are the best team in the world but last week we proved they were only human and we aim to do the same again." Porto certainly caught the European champions off guard with their flying start and might have had the entire tie wrapped up if they had taken their chances and not gifted Wayne Rooney an equaliser. Ferreira promised his team would not be playing for a goalless draw that would take them through, as it did in the previous round against Atletico Madrid. "We will not change, no matter what the circumstance," said Ferreira. "There is no other way for us to play than how we did last week and I would never tell my team to operate below capacity just to achieve a draw."
