    Phelan succeeds Queiroz

    03 Sep 2008 - 13:38:09

Manchester United have named former midfielder Mike Phelan as their new assistant manager.

The 45-year-old replaces Carlos Queiroz, who left Old Trafford in the summer to manage the Portugal national team, while Rene Meulensteen succeeds Phelan as first-team coach.

Sir Alex Ferguson told United's official website: "I'm delighted that Mick and Rene have agreed to fill these important positions.

"Mick knows Manchester United inside out, having been associated with the club for the best part of 20 years.

"He's a very talented and professional coach, whose ability and contribution to the club's success has often been understated.

"Rene brings different ideas and experience to the role of first-team coach.

"I believe the two will provide an excellent team to continue the club's willingness to try new ideas and constantly drive for success in an increasingly competitive game."

Phelan played for Burnley and Norwich City before joining United in 1989. He made more than 100 appearances for the club before ending his playing days with West Brom in 1995.

He immediately returned to Carrow Road as assistant manager to Gary Megson and followed the current Bolton boss to Blackpool and then Stockport County.

Phelan took up a role at United's Centre of Excellence in 1999 and was promoted to first-team coach when Steve McClaren left the post two years later.
