Park ruled out of Olympics
17 Jun 2008 - 10:42:42
Manchester United midfielder Ji-Sung Park will not take part in the Beijing Olympics for South Korea due to injury.
The 27-year-old returned from knee ligament damage to make 18 appearances for United in the closing stages of the last campaign and helped them secure a Premier League and Champions League double.
But after missing a World Cup qualifying win over Turkmenistan last weekend with a knee problem, South Korea coach Park Sung-hwa has decided against gambling with the player's fitness for the games with the Premier League season just around the corner.
Park was expected to be named as one of three players aged over 23 for the competition in August.
He said: "Unfortunately, Park will not be selected for the Olympics.
"After discussing the matter with the Korean Football Association, we made the decision considering the fact that Park isn't fit and he will be in competition at his club.
"Manchester United's pre-season training starts on July 7 and it would be difficult for the player to come back and combine well with the team."
