Owen suffers groin setback
01 Oct 2009 - 08:10:45
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that striker Michael Owen will be out for at least a fortnight after suffering a groin injury in the Champions League victory over Wolfsburg.
The 29-year-old lasted just 20 minutes of the 2-1 victory at Old Trafford, having been handed only his third start since joining the Red Devils in the summer.
Ferguson said after the win: "Michael felt a slight groin injury after training on Sunday.
"He thought he was fine to play, but on a wet surface, when he tried to turn quickly, it came back again.
"It is not a serious one and I am not worried because players do get them, but he will be out for two to three weeks.
"The only good part is that his fitness levels are very good."
Owen had been hoping to push for an England recall, with the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer his main target.
However, he will now miss the final two qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus, leaving him few chances to impress head coach Fabio Capello.
