No Rooney chance for Bayern
06 Apr 2010 - 14:07:39
Wayne Rooney has "no chance" of being fit for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Rooney suffered ankle ligament damage during the latter stages of last week's quarter-final first leg against the German side which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Red Devils.
The 34-goal striker was reported to be close to making a surprise comeback in the second leg at Old Trafford despite Ferguson ruling him out for "two to three weeks" in the build-up to Saturday's Premier League defeat by Chelsea.
However, despite revealing that Rooney has made "good progress", Ferguson insists there is no way that he will be fit enough to play on Wednesday night.
Rooney is now more likely to make his comeback in Sunday's league trip to Blackburn Rovers.
Meanwhile, Ferguson has demanded an improved performance following a disappointing showing at the Allianz Arena last week.
The Red Devils grabbed a second-minute lead through Rooney but were outplayed for long periods of the game.
Bayern pulled themselves level on 76 minutes before snatching a second goal in the dying seconds following some hesitant defending.
"A better performance than the one in Munich is vital," declared Ferguson. "A good performance would get the fans and the players going."
