After Sunday's 2-2 against Bolton, Ferguson revealed that veteran winger Ryan Giggs has become the latest name to join the ever expanding injury list at Old Trafford.
Giggs will be out for two weeks with a hamstring injury, meaning he will definitely miss the trip to Spain and Saturday's visit to Sunderland.
Wayne Rooney joined the 36-year-old on the treatment table, limping off after picking up an ankle knock at the Reebok Stadium. But he is expected to be available for the midweek game.
The Scot will be hoping that there is not a case of deja vu in this week's European game, after seeing Antonio Valencia stretchered off in the 0-0 draw against Rangers last time out.
Valencia is not expected to return until February at the earliest - after fracturing and dislocating his left ankle and damaging ankle ligaments in the same incident.
There is more positive news on midfield duo Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves. Carrick is set to return at the Stadium of Light after being out for three weeks with an Achilles injury, while long-term absentee Hargreaves is back in full training.
After being plagued with knee problems for the last two years, the ex-Bayern Munich man will be hoping to avoid another failed comeback.
Question marks also remain over Rio Ferdinand's fitness after the centre-back wasn't risked in Sunday's draw.
