Manchester United set to go head-to-head with arch rivals Liverpool for Konoplyanka signature

Reports today suggest that Manchester United are set to battle arch rivals Liverpool for Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Liverpool have long shown interest in the 24-year-old and all but secured a deal to bring the player to Anfield on the last day of the January transfer window, only for the deal to be scuppered when Dnipro owner Kolomoyskyi stepped in and put his foot down. Much to the disappointment of Liverpool fans and manager Brendan Rodgers, who said the club did all they could to sign the winger.

“The club did everything possible to get the player in.

I've heard the problem mentioned was about the money but that was not a problem. It just wasn't to be.

I feel really sorry for the player because he was obviously desperate to come but it's gone now and we will review it in the summer.”

Manchester United's interest in the Ukrainian international has been sparked by the arrival of new boss Louis van Gaal, according to Daily Mirror reporter Darren Lewis.

“Louis van Gaal is ready to kick off his Manchester United reign by squaring up to arch-rivals Liverpool over £12million Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka.

The Anfield giants have been confident of striking a deal for the 24-year-old this summer - despite simmering tensions with his Ukrainian club over their botched attempt at a deal for Konoplyanka on the final day of the January transfer window.”

Liverpool still have the edge though, with Champions League football to entice Konoplyanka. Although with United looking to do all they can to rebuild their team and return to the summit of English and European football, the wages and fees they would be able to pay may be enough to seal the deal.
