Manchester United back in the race to sign Real Madrid's KlaasJan Huntelaar
Published : 07 Jul 2009 09:00:50
The Scot had been targeting the Dutchman before he made the switch to the Bernabeu from Ajax in January and following the Spanish giants multiple signings this summer, together with Huntelaar's failure to have made an impact on the field, Ferguson is ready to try again. The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema at Real will see Huntelaar slip to at least fourth in the pecking order, but with next season so important for players hoping to reach the World Cup finals in South Africa, it is unlikely that the 25-year-old will be happy to sit in the stands. United will have to match the £20 million that Real paid at the start of the year, but having recently come in to £80 million through the sale of Ronaldo, the Old Trafford outfit is in a strong financial position. Competition, however, will come from AC Milan who, having lost Kaka to Real, have confirmed tabling an offer for Huntelaar and another United target - Luis Fabiano. Meanwhile, United are expected to announce the signing of Bordeaux winger Gabriel Obertan later today (Tues). Chelsea and Arsenal are understood to have been in the race to land the 20-year-old, who the Premier League champions have secured for £8 million. Obertan, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Lorient, is a regular in the France Under-21 side and scored against England U21 in March.
