Even only half fit, David De Gea would surely have handled this one with a minimum of fuss. It might have been the best thing for Manchester United's underfire goalkeeper. After the furnace of Anfield, a frosty night spent keeping warm and keeping out of the spotlight, while Sir Alex Ferguson's side moved level at the top of the table with penalties in each half from Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov. With De Gea sitting recuperating in the stands following illness and Anders Lindegaard ruled out with an ankle injury, 21-year-old Ben Amos enjoyed a sound but uneventful Premier League debut against opponents who were toothless.
