Wherever LvG has managed, success has shortly followed and Manchester Utd fans will be hoping that he can turn around the failing fortunes for the red half of Manchester. The David Moyes chapter is one that United fans will have already forgotten but the mental scars will be etched at the back of the mind as the normally fortress Old Trafford became a happy hunting ground for so many visiting teams last season. Van Gaal will soon put an end to that and the experts in the game believe that he will emulate SAF and get the best out of his group of players.

So, who is LvG? What do we know about him? With the season just over a week away and Swansea about to offer him his first Premiership test, takes a closer look at the man who has a fearless reputation in the football game. Here are 10 facts you probably were not aware of:

1. Tomorrow is Louis Van Gaal's birthday (8th August) and he will be celebrating his 63rd birthday.

2. At birth he was registered with the name Aloysius Paulus Maria Van Gaal.

3. Van Gaal is one of 9 brothers and sisters.

4. As a professional footballer he played in the midfield position beginning his career at Ajax in 1972 although he did not make any senior appearances until he moved to Royal Antwerp a year later.

5. He scored 34 goals from a total of 331 appearances.

6. His mentor prior to becoming a manager was Leo Beenhakker.

7. He won league titles in each of the three countries he has managed: Holland, Spain and Germany.

8. He won the UEFA Champions League whilst with AJAX in the 94-95 season and reached the final the following year finishing runners-up.

9. Van Gaal was crowned World Football Manager of the Year in 1995.

10. Manchester United is his 8th managerial appointment - previously he has managed Ajax, Barcelona (x2), Nederlands (x2), AZ and Bayern Munich.

David Moyes first game in charge was also against Swansea and he managed to come away with a comfortable 4-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium. LvG will be hoping for a similar start but that's where the similarities between this great Dutch manager and David Moyes is likely to end. Expectations will be high and United fans will be expecting a serious tilt at the Premiership title this season along with a good run in the Champions League. Van Gaal is the man to help turn these aspirations into a reality.
