Lost points leave Fergie fuming
26 Oct 2008 - 10:58:39
Sir Alex Ferguson accused his Manchester United side of throwing away two points after being held to a 1-1 draw by Everton.
The Red Devils claimed an early lead at Goodison Park through Darren Fletcher, but missed a host of first-half chances before the home side rallied and earned a point with Marouane Fellaini's equaliser.
"We've thrown it away in a way because we've had so much control of the match," Ferguson told MUTV.
"It's disappointing to lose two points for that.
"We had good chances, we played some fantastic football. It was a golden spell for us and these are the times you should be capitalising. We didn't and we've suffered.
"But you have to give credit to Everton, they've fought like tigers the second half.
"They changed the pattern of their game and got stuck right into us. We've only ourselves to blame and we can't deny Everton their point."
Meanwhile, Ferguson admitted he substituted Wayne Rooney midway through the second half as he feared the former Everton striker could have been red-carded.
Rooney earned the wrath of the home fans after provocatively kissing the badge on his shirt following his 68th-minute booking by referee Alan Wiley for a foul on Mikel Arteta.
"The crowd were reacting and I did feel he might get sent off so I had to take him off," admitted the veteran Scot.
"I just didn't think the referee was giving our players proper protection. I saw some bad tackles and it's the referee's job to protect players."
