Honoured Giggs to play on
27 Apr 2009 - 07:15:38
Ryan Giggs insists he has no plans to retire after the Manchester United midfielder was named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year for the first time in his glittering career.
Giggs, 35, has started only 12 Premier League games this season but has played an integral role in United's march towards a potential third straight league crown.
The former Wales international could pick up his 11th Premier League winners' medal next month and is in line to make his 800th career appearance for the Old Trafford club before the end of season.
Giggs was twice named the young player of the year earlier in his career but spoke of the honour of winning the "big one" voted for by his peers.
''It's right up there, with personal accolades it's the best to have as it's voted by your fellow players,'' he said.
''I've been fortunate to win a lot of trophies, I won the young player award twice, but this is the big one.''
Speaking about his future, Giggs added: ''As long as I'm getting picked, enjoying it and injury-free, I'll carry on as long as I can.
"At 35 you can't look too far into the distance, you just can't.''
Meanwhile, the winger also paid tribute to the influence of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on his career.
''The manager has been massive in my career from when I first met him when I was 13,'' he continued.
''That's over 20 years and he knows me better than anyone and our relationship has been brilliant and just gets better.
''I've been so fortunate to have such a great career in so many great teams, it's not even worth thinking about what it would have been like without the manager.''
