Heinze set to join Madrid

22 Aug 2007 - 20:15:15

Real Madrid claim they have agreed a deal with Manchester United to sign wantaway defender Gabriel Heinze.

The 29-year-old Argentina international had been expected to leave Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window on August 31 despite seeing a move to Liverpool blocked by a Premier League arbitration panel on Wednesday.

Heinze claimed he had written permission to join Liverpool for £6.8million, but the Red Devils refused to sell him to their Premier League rivals and referred to move to an arbitration panel.

However, just hours after seeing his switch to Anfield fall through, the former Paris SG defender has now sealed a move to Spain after Real revealed they had reached agreement with United to sign the unsettled full-back.

"Real Madrid and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gabriel Heinze," read a statement on their official website.

"The Argentinian will sign a contract for the next four seasons and will be immediately incorporated into (coach) Bernd Schuster's squad."

Heinze is expected to sign for the Spanish champions for a fee around the £8million mark.
