HATCHET MAN: Is Sir Alex Ferguson disguising his fears over Manchester United?

Sir Alex Ferguson is about to start the season a worried man. You wouldn't know it from his demeanour around his players or at Manchester United's various pre-season matches. He doesn't even let it show when his first-choice goalkeeper is crocked to leave him relying on reserves. But if you listen to the pronouncements he has made before a ball is kicked it sounds like he is protesting too much. Ferguson likes a row more than most managers but tucking into Manchester City and Liverpool before the season has started is aggressive even by his standards. When you think he has been desperately defending his lack of big buys in the transfer window and insisting Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney will score 20 goals each, it makes you wonder if he is walking around with his fingers crossed behind his back.
