Hatchet man: Carling Cup final Fan-O-Meter was nothing to shout about

Published: 02 Mar 2009 - 10:27:37

That annoying advertising hoarding at Wembley in the Carling Cup final on Sunday which flashed up meaningless figures all game long was claimed by the companies responsible for it to be a 'world first'. The Fan-O-Meter (they must have taken ages coming up with that original name) was supposed to measure the levels of supporter noise from the Manchester United and Tottenham contingents. Make a noise: Spurs fans find something to get excited about at Wembley But it just seemed like a ridiculous and unnecessary gimmick that one set of fans were always bound not to believe.   More from Hatchet Man... Hatchet man: QPR owners should give Sousa the time they were promising 02/03/09 Hatchet man: Stumbling Brown matches Geovanni with a tantrum of his own 02/03/09 Hatchet man: Rio's in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks Jose is fit to replace Fergie 02/03/09 Hatchet man: Redknapp and O'Neill left with egg on their faces 02/03/09 Simon Jordan 27/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Gray was pie in the Sky when he said Baggies lack fight - West Brom lack quality not bottle 27/02/09 HATCHET MAN: When players can count the fans at a near-empty Riverside, Pogatetz thinks it's brilliant practice for the second division 27/02/09 HATCHET MAN: If Liverpool send for Mourinho it will be Benitez's own fault - at least Jose knows how to sign contracts and win Premier League titles 27/02/09 VIEW FULL ARCHIVE   It may be a world first but, as spectacularly unsuccessful as it was, it will probably be a last too. The companies responsible, Sky Sports and Carling, set up a charity donation to go with the publicity exercise, so it was not all bad, but they could have done that without a pointless display by the side of the pitch and on the TV.
