Graham Polls Official Line: Dont take any liberties with referee in San Siro cauldron
Published: 24 Feb 2009 - 00:18:04
San Siro stadium in Milan rarely sells out, but when it does there is a fantastic atmosphere which can easily affect moods and actions of players and officials. Tonight's referee for the match between Inter Milan and Manchester United , Luis Medina Cantalejo, is a mild mannered, unassuming man off the field but a strict disciplinarian on it and he will not be affected in the cauldron. The players must do their best to follow his lead. Ronaldo flicks out at David Dunn at Old Trafford on Saturday Spaniard Cantalejo, who will be 45 this Sunday and is in his final season, will not take reputations into consideration and, given his wealth of experience in La Liga, will recognise and act strongly if his authority is brought into question. The kind of petulant kick which Cristiano Ronaldo got away with against Blackburn on Saturday, if seen by Cantalejo, will not be acceptable and will more likely be deemed a red-card offence. Wayne Rooney should also have learned that staying calm in Europe is essential, as UEFA referees will not be as tolerant as domestic officials.
