    Foster out of England friendly

    10 Aug 2009 - 17:31:45

Goalkeeper Ben Foster has been ruled out of England's midweek friendly against the Netherlands due to injury.

The Manchester United keeper picked up an unspecified but minor knock during Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Chelsea and will not make the trip to Amsterdam.

Foster was hoping to profit from the absence of regular England number one David James against the Dutch.

Instead his place in Fabio Capello's squad has now gone to Manchester City's England Under-21 international Joe Hart.

"Ben Foster has returned to Manchester United this afternoon having picked up a knock during Sunday's FA Community Shield against Chelsea," read a brief statement from the Football Association.

"Joe Hart has been called into the squad as a replacement."

Injury-plagued Foster has made just two appearances for England and his absence leaves Hart, Paul Robinson and Robert Green to battle it out for the starting place on Wednesday.
