Fletcher defends United line-up

Darren Fletcher insists Manchester United would have found it difficult to break down Rangers even with a different starting line-up. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has come in for criticism following the 0-0 draw with Rangers after making 10 changes from the team which was held 3-3 by Everton at the weekend. Rangers produced a disciplined display at Old Trafford in the opening group game in the Champions League and United were unable to find a way past. Fletcher praised the way in which the SPL champions defended and the midfielder feels it would have been hard for whichever United team was sent into battle. "We were up against a resilient Rangers side and it didn't matter who would have played," Fletcher told Sky Sports News. "They would have found it equally as difficult because they doubled up in the wide areas, they didn't let us cross the ball and, even when we did cross the ball, they had three centre-halves in there to clear it. "So, no matter who played against that, it was going to prove very difficult." Attention now turns to Sunday's Premier League game against Liverpool and Fletcher is looking forward to the visit of United's arch-rivals. He added: "That's a massive game. Liverpool is a big derby game for Man Utd, obviously, because of the history between the two clubs. "It's one of the games in the fixture list you look for and I'm really looking forward to it."
