Fletcher chases progression
31 Mar 2010 - 15:35:34
Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes the side can still qualify for the Champions League semi-finals despite their disappointing first leg defeat against Bayern Munich.
United opened the scoring through free-scoring Wayne Rooney inside two minutes but the German giants hit back with a deflected Franck Ribery free-kick and last-gasp Ivica Olic strike.
England star Rooney also collected an ankle injury in the lead up to the winner and he is expected to be missing for up to a month.
But Fletcher is confident his team-mates can overturn the narrow deficit at Old Trafford next week.
"It's not insurmountable," he said.
"We certainly respected Bayern before this match and we've still got great respect for them. They're a very good side. You don't play any bad sides in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
"We've learned a lot about Bayern and about ourselves tonight and we'll take all that into the match at Old Trafford next Wednesday.
"The Bayern midfielders pressed the ball quite quickly and got numbers behind the ball. It was difficult in there, but you expect that when you go away from home in Europe."
