Ferguson upbeat on Owen
02 Oct 2009 - 10:11:28
Manchester United striker Michael Owen should be fit enough to face Bolton Wanderers in a fortnight's time, according to boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The 29-year-old former Liverpool star had to limp out of Wednesday's Champions League victory against Wolfsburg after only 20 minutes when he aggravated a troublesome groin injury.
Owen had been struggling with the problem in the build-up to the game but Ferguson has allayed fears that the striker is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
He confirmed: "It's not as bad as we first thought. There was precaution attached to it, and he should be available next week.
"He missed training (before the Wolfsburg match) and we maybe should have left him out. But we wanted him to play and he wanted to play.
"He'll be fit for Bolton (on October 17), and we're pleased with that. On Michael's part, it was precaution, which is understandable given his history."
Ironically, after Owen was replaced by Dimitar Berbatov on Wednesday, United's display against Wolfsburg improved as they came from behind to eventually win 2-1 thanks to second-half strikes by Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.
