Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he once tried to tempt legendary Italy defender Paolo Maldini away from AC Milan.
Maldini, who won 126 caps for the Azzurri during his illustrious career, ended his playing days at the end of last season, having spent more than two decades at the San Siro - making more than 900 appearances in all competitions.
Ferguson told The Sun: "I always wanted to get Paolo here, but it was impossible.
"I met his father at a game and told him how much I'd love to have his son at United.
"Cesare smiled at me and said 'My grandfather was Milan, my father was Milan, I played for Milan and now my son is Milan'.
"And that was it - story over."
