Ferguson rules out Sol swoop
11 Dec 2009 - 11:30:36
Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson cannot understand where rumours linking Sol Campbell with a move to Old Trafford have come from.
Reports earlier in the week had linked the 35-year-old ex-Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth defender with a switch to injury-ravaged United but Ferguson has poured cold water on the possibility.
Campbell, who is a free agent after playing one game for Notts County during an ill-fated spell at Meadow Lane earlier this season, has also been linked with moves to Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion recently.
Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea and Wes Brown are all currently sidelined although Serbia international Vidic is expected to be fit enough to play against Aston Villa this weekend.
Ferguson, who was forced to play midfielders Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher as makeshift central defenders in Tuesday's Champions League victory at Wolfsburg, said of the Campbell rumours: "I don't know where this came from but it's all wrong.
"Sol Campbell was a great player, but he isn't a player we're thinking about getting to come to United.
"Jonny Evans could be back in ten days and John O'Shea will be with us in January. We're having a hard time with centre-backs at this moment in time but I'm sure by January most of them will be back."
