Fergie takes time out on transfer deadline day

Published: 02 Feb 2010 - 10:06:31

Sir Alex Ferguson opted out of deadline day as the January transfer window slammed shut - but the United manager still had his hands full. The fiery Scot is more used to dishing out the hairdryer treatment, but found himself on the receiving end when returning to his former school in Govan. Ferguson was there to celebrate the centenary of Govan High - though it is unlikely it had a hairdressing department when he ran through the halls. United's lack of transfer activity came as little surprise with Ferguson inisting he would be keeping his chequebook in his pocket. That didn't stop his surprising everyone with a swoop for Fulham starlet, Chris Smalling last week in a deal that could be worth around £10m. The centre back doesn't arrive at Old Trafford until the summer and was the only in-coming business conducted by United. Striker, Danny Welbeck, was the highest profile player making his way through the exit door, going on loan to Preston, while Ben Foster's proposed move to Tottenham never materialised. Despite some speculation that Michael Owen could be a shock target for Aston Villa, the England striker also remained at Old Trafford. Another player on the move is midfielder Sam Hewson, who is set to sign for Bury on loan. The 21-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut at United. What do you think? Have your say.
