Fergie sets out future plan
10 Apr 2009 - 08:17:21
Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested he will retire after leading Manchester United to two more Champions League successes.
The 67-year-old Scot has been at the helm of the Old Trafford club since 1986 and has won more trophies than any other manager in English football.
Last month, Ferguson's son Darren - himself a manager at League One side Peterborough United - claimed his father could retire at the end of the next season.
Ferguson Jnr claimed he could step down after guiding United to two more league titles, which would take the Red Devils beyond the current record 18-mark set by bitter rivals Liverpool.
However, the veteran United boss has now suggested his focus is just as much on Europe where he feels his teams over the 26 years he has been in charge have not been as successful as they should have been.
"If there was one challenge, I would love the club to win more European trophies," he told CNN.
"I don't think we've won the number we should have won.
"There have been years where we were unlucky. The years we were disappointed. The years when we've thrown games away and that sort of gives you a kaleidoscope of what football is like in a way.
"So, therefore, if we could just win a couple more European trophies then I would definitely quit."
Meanwhile, Ferguson has conceded his shoes will be difficult to fill after guiding United to two Champions League success, the Premier League trophy ten times, the FA Cup on four occasions and two League Cup triumphs.
"I'm glad it's not my decision but I think you need someone with experience here because it's a big club now. It's a massive club," he added.
"I like Jose (Mourinho). I think he's a good guy. We've got on very well together but I don't know what the club thinks about who the next manager is going to be.
"Hopefully it's not for another two or three years because I intend to stay on as long as I can."
